What is

STEEL?

Assorted piles of steel rods and tubes

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, known for being strong, durable, and 100% recyclable. It’s used in buildings, vehicles, appliances, tools, and just about everything in between. Unlike some materials that degrade when recycled, steel can be melted down and reused over and over again without losing quality.

In fact, over 70% of steel produced globally comes from recycled scrap, making it a key material in a circular economy.

TYPES OF

STEEL SCRAP
WE ACCEPT

At Phoenix Recycling, we’re set up to handle just about any type of steel scrap you’ve got – heavy, light, commercial, or domestic. Here’s a breakdown of what we’d love to take off your hands:

Oversize shearable Heavy Melting Steel (HMS)

HEAVY DUTY
STEEL

Steel Oversize HMS – Oxy Cut

This scrap is the really heavy stuff, like rail tracks, big machinery, and thick steel beams that are longer than one metre and thicker than 18mm. Oxy-fuel torches are used to cut it down and then melt it into new construction materials, industrial-grade steel, and reinforcing bars.

Oversize HMS – Shearable

This scrap includes I-beams, steel pipes, and large structural sections over one metre long but thinner than 18mm. These are cut with hydraulic shears and then processed into new industrial steel products.

Insize HMS (Heavy Melting Steel)

This scrap steel is already cut into pieces under one metre, and it includes brake rotors, steel wheel rims, and RSJ offcuts. Because it’s ready to go, it’s melted down and turned into rebar, sheet metal, and high-strength steel components.

VEHICLE & MIXED
SCRAP

CAR BODIES

Whether it’s a stripped or whole car, we’ll take it. Our recycling partners separate the steel from plastics, rubber, and other materials, then melt it down to create new vehicle frames, appliances, and industrial equipment.

HIGH-GRADE MIXED METALS

This type of steel scrap is a mix of mostly ferrous metals with some aluminium or non-ferrous materials. We sort and refine it, extracting high-quality steel for new industrial and structural applications.

Pile of scrap light gauge clean steel

LIGHT GAUGE
STEEL

LIGHT GAUGE - CLEAN STEEL

Light gauge clean steel includes roofing iron, steel ducting, empty drums, and other clean, thin steel items. This steel scrap is shredded, melted, and repurposed into reinforcing mesh, steel panels, and household goods.

LIGHT GAUGE - GRADE 4

This scrap is light steel with some non-metallic attachments, like car panels with plastic or insulation. Shredding and separation techniques are used to recover the steel, which is then turned into sheet metal, reinforcing bars, and automotive components.

PRODUCTION &
MACHINING
SCRAP

Black/blue grade new production steel

New Production Steel (Black/Blue Steel)

New production steel includes factory offcuts and unused steel sheets that haven’t been painted or coated. It’s melted down and reused in industrial manufacturing, fabrication, and infrastructure projects.

STEEL SWARF

These are the tiny steel shavings and turnings left over from machining. Instead of tossing them, we collect and clean them before they get melted down to make new automotive and industrial components.

REINFORCING & MACHINERY
STEEL

MANGANESE STEEL

This super-tough steel is found in rock crushers, jaw plates, and quarry equipment. Once recycled, it’s turned into railroad tracks, heavy machinery, and impact-resistant industrial tools.

REO ROD WIRE

Reo rod wire is found in concrete reinforcement, fencing, and structural projects; this high-strength steel is melted down and turned into new reinforcing bars, steel mesh, and framework materials.

HOW IS STEEL
RECYCLED?

The steel recycling process is designed to maximise recovery of high-quality material with minimal waste.

  • 1.
Sorting &
Processing

Steel scrap is sorted by type (heavy, light, or mixed steel). Any non-metallic materials like rubber, plastic, or paint coatings are removed before processing.

  • 2.
Shredding &
Melting

Clean steel is shredded into smaller pieces before being melted in a furnace at over 1,600°C. During melting, impurities are removed, leaving behind pure, high-strength steel.

  • 3.
Casting &
Repurposing

The purified steel is cast into ingots, rods, or sheets, ready to be used in construction, manufacturing, and industrial applications.

WHy recycle
STEEL?

Steel is one of the most recycled materials on the planet, and for good reason. Recycling steel helps reduce waste, save energy, and cut emissions.

  • Minimise landfill waste:
Steel doesn’t break down, so recycling keeps it in circulation instead of taking up space in landfills.

  • Save energy & reduce emissions:
Recycling steel uses 74% less energy than making new steel from iron ore, which means fewer emissions and lower environmental impact.

  • Conserve resources:
Steel recycling reduces the need for new mining, preserving natural resources like iron ore and coal.

  • Keep quality materials in use:
Steel is 100% recyclable, meaning it can be used over and over again without losing strength.
