What is
Aluminium?
Aluminium is a lightweight, silvery-white metal known for its low density, corrosion resistance, and high conductivity. It’s the most widely used non-ferrous metal in the world, with global production exceeding 58 million metric tonnes per year.
Aluminium is extracted from bauxite ore, refined into alumina, and then smelted using the Hall-Héroult process to produce pure aluminium, which is cast into ingots, sheets, or rods for manufacturing. While aluminium is abundant, mining and refining are highly energy-intensive, which is why recycling is crucial for sustainability.

TYPES OF
ALUMINIUM SCRAP
WE ACCEPT
At Phoenix Recycling, we take all sorts of aluminium scrap, whether it’s from your home, a worksite, or an industrial operation. We don’t just recycle it; we help ensure it is turned into something useful again, keeping valuable materials in circulation.
Here’s what we accept and where it ends up:
DOMESTIC &
HOUSEHOLD
ALUMINIUM
Aluminium: Domestic
Domestic aluminium scrap is any general household item with minimal contamination. Think old window frames, light fittings, or even kitchen foil. Though these items may seem insignificant, they contain highly recyclable metal that, once processed, is reused in automotive parts, consumer goods, and packaging.
Aluminium Cans:
(UBC – Used Beverage Cans)
That stash of empty drink cans? Bring them in! Aluminium cans are one of the most recyclable products in the world. Cans are 92-99% aluminium, and once melted down, they are purified and rolled into new aluminium sheets, ready to become fresh cans within 60 days. The aluminium from these cans is also used in automotive and aerospace applications, where lightweight materials are essential.
MANUFACTURING
& INDUSTRIAL
ALUMINIUM
Aluminium CLIP
These are clean, unpainted offcuts from manufacturing. Because it’s high-purity aluminium, it gets remelted into new aluminium sheets, car parts, and building materials.
Aluminium Litho Plates
Used in the printing industry, these thin, high-purity aluminium plates are perfect for recycling into electronics, aerospace parts, and precision machinery.
Aluminium SWARF
If you work with aluminium machining, you’ll know about swarf, those little shavings and turnings left behind from cutting or grinding. Rather than letting them go to waste, we ship them off to be processed into ingots, which are widely used in engine parts, radiators, and mag wheels.
ALUMINIUM
WIRE & CABLE
Aluminium: WIRE
Bare aluminium wire is commonly used in electrical wiring, power lines, and industrial wiring. It’s one of the best conductors of electricity and, once recycled, goes straight back into new power lines, industrial wiring, and electrical grids.
Aluminium WIRE PVC
These are aluminium electrical cables coated in PVC insulation. The plastic is removed before recycling the aluminium into new electrical wiring and industrial components.
ACSR (Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced)
ACSR cables are aluminium conductors reinforced with a steel core for added strength, making them ideal for high-voltage power transmission. The aluminium is recovered and used to make more power cables, transport infrastructure, and high-strength alloys.
CAST & EXTRUDED
ALUMINIUM
Aluminium cast
This is aluminium that’s melted and poured into moulds to make engine blocks, machinery parts, and heavy-duty equipment. Once recycled, it’s turned into new auto parts, aircraft components, and heavy machinery.
Aluminium EXTRUSION
This type of aluminium has been shaped into long sections, think window frames, pipes, and construction materials. Once recycled, it is processed back into brand-new extrusions for building, transport, and industrial use.
AUTOMOTIVE
ALUMINIUM
Aluminium MAG WHEELS
Lightweight, strong, and made from 97% aluminium, mag wheels are one of the best types of aluminium to recycle. They get repurposed into new wheels, aircraft components, and high-performance alloys.
Aluminium RADIATORS
The aluminium radiators we collect get stripped of any plastic or steel and melted down to be used in vehicle cooling systems, industrial heat exchangers, and even aerospace technology.
MIXED & HIGH GRADE
SCRAP ALUMINIUM
We can also recycle High-Grade Mixed Metals, which are primarily aluminium but might include some other fixtures or fittings, such as screws or small non-ferrous parts. We carefully separate the materials to recover the aluminium, which then gets used in high-quality aluminium alloys for industry, manufacturing, and construction.
HOW IS
ALUMINIUM
RECYCLED?
One of aluminium’s biggest advantages is that it is infinitely recyclable, meaning it can be melted down and reused over and over again without losing quality. In fact, 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today.
The recycling process is far more efficient than mining and refining and follows these key steps:
-
1.
Sorting &
Shredding
Aluminium scrap is sorted by type and grade (e.g., cans, wire, cast aluminium) to ensure high-quality recycling.
We bale the scrap which is then exported and either melted or shredded into smaller pieces for easier processing.
-
2.
De-coating &
Melting
Paint, plastic coatings, and contaminants are removed before melting.
The cleaned aluminium is melted at 660°C (1220°F) in a furnace.
-
3.
Purification &
Alloying
Impurities are skimmed off, and alloys are adjusted to meet specific industrial needs.
Aluminium can be re-alloyed into high-strength, lightweight metals used in cars, aircraft, and machinery.
-
4.
Casting &
Forming
The purified aluminium is cast into ingots, rods, sheets, or coils.
These are then rolled, extruded, or shaped into new products.
WHAT MAKES
ALUMINIUM
so useful?
Aluminium is one of the most versatile and sustainable materials used across transport, construction, packaging, and electronics. Its properties make it an essential part of modern manufacturing.
Lightweight but strong:
Aluminium weighs about one-third as much as steel, making it ideal for industries where weight reduction is crucial, such as automotive, aerospace, and transport. It also helps improve fuel efficiency in vehicles while maintaining structural integrity.Highly corrosion-resistant:
Unlike iron, aluminium naturally forms an oxide layer that protects it from rust and weathering. This makes it perfect for boats, aircraft, construction, and outdoor structures. It’s widely used in roofing, window frames, and bridges for its durability.Great conductor of electricity & heat:
Aluminium is second only to copper in conductivity, but it is far lighter and more cost-effective. It’s commonly used in power lines, electrical wiring, and heat exchangers in refrigeration and air conditioning.Malleable & easy to work with:
Aluminium can be cast, extruded, rolled, or machined into a variety of forms. It is used in everything from beverage cans and kitchen foil to aircraft bodies and industrial machinery.Non-toxic & safe for food & medical use:
Because aluminium is non-toxic, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant, it is widely used in food packaging, beverage cans, medical devices, and even pharmaceuticals.
WHy recycle
scrap ALUMINIUM?
Recycling aluminium is one of the most effective ways to reduce waste and conserve energy. Compared to mining and refining, recycling aluminium:
Uses 95% less energy:
Producing aluminium from bauxite takes 20 times more energy than recycling it.Cuts greenhouse gas emissions:
Recycling aluminium significantly reduces CO₂ and other emissions, making it a greener alternative.Reduces landfill waste:
Since aluminium is infinitely recyclable, there’s no reason for it to end up in landfills.Conserves natural resources:
Recycling keeps aluminium in circulation, reducing the need for mining and protecting natural ecosystems.
